I am a British-South African Mixed Media Contemporary Artist whose work is heavily influenced by my having Synaesthesia, "...a neurological trait or condition that results in a joining or merging of senses that aren't normally connected." (Chrissie Giles, The Independent article 'Meet the man who can taste sounds'). This enables me to translate intangible aspects such as emotion, sound and sometimes taste into tangible, physical pieces.
The work has been described as feeling familiar, as if it's a forgotten language or map to a place we once collectively knew, and it is this shared experience that I am particularly interested in exploring throughout my practice. I find the concept of unexplainable connection fascinating, questioning how a neurological condition such as Synaesthesia and my experience with it can feel at home within so many who do not have the condition themselves. This phenomena is of course not unique to my practice and has occurred continuously throughout history, and as a result the work is heavily informed by research into shared memory, hallucinations and psychedelics, ancient history and architecture, physics, particularly quantum mechanics, and esotericism. The work is further informed by art movements such as Bauhaus, Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism and Surrealist Automatism, Kinetic and Outsider Art.
My predominant focus throughout my practice thus far has been drawing, sculpture and installation but enjoy working with any medium that piques my interest, and hope to explore video and audio further in the future.
